I had the opportunity to DJ at the Renaissance Arlington Capital View Hotel located at 2800 S Potomac Ave, Arlington, VA 22202, during the 2016 Blizzard. The hotel asked me to DJ for their guests, who were snowed-in. I recall packing that Thursday night for the busy weekend, because on Friday morning I was scheduled to shoot a Video for my DJ Career.
Due to the heavy snow coming down a lot sooner than expected, I decided to stop the shoot and head to the hotel earlier to get checked in. I arrived at the hotel at 3pm and was able to check in and un-load my equipment. As I prepared for the first night of DJing, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I know that the staff had been promoting a DJ in the main lobby for the weekend. They planned this because everyone was snowed in due to Ronald Reagan National Airport shutting down.
The design of Renaissance Arlington Capital View Hotel is so beautiful and modern, it helped me in deciding how to start the night musically. With the early dinner vibes I decided to start the night out with some 70’s Disco & 80’s Jam’s to set the mood and the atmosphere for the night.
As I moved my way in through out the night, more guests started coming into the bar and the dining area. I started shifting over to some 90’s Dance track’s like “Show Me Love” , “Push The Feeling On”, and “Good Vibrations” which began to bring the energy up. Once I hit the crowd with “Deport Them” by Sean Paul which is a great throwback the dance-floor filled up.
We partied and danced till Midnight that Friday night. As time went by, I went from songs such as line dance favorite “Wobble” by V.I.C. to disco classic “Thats the way I like it” by KC and The Sunshine Band to latin hit “Danza Kuduro” by Don Omar. First night was a success! I was definitely looking forward to Saturday night! Even-though I knew I had to do some preparation on my set so I could keep it fresh and different for night number two.
The second night I started the night out with a modern down-tempo top 40 vibe consisting of artists such as Justin Timberlake, Daft Punk, & Snoop Dogg. About an hour into my set I was in the 90’s Hip-Hop era playing tracks such as “Mo Money Mo Problems”, “Gettin’ Jiggy Wit it”, and “Bust A Move”. I noticed that on night two, there were a lot more guest. I was told that because Friday night was a success, the word got out to the surrounding hotels and apartment complex’s about our blizzard party. This attributed to the increase in the party’s attendance and fun. The high light track’s from the night were “Vivir Mi Vida” by Marc Anthony, “Lose Control” by Missy Elliot, “Don’t Stop Believing” By Journey. We ended the second night just as great as the first! Definitely an experience to remember. Not many people get an opportunity to party with a few hundred people in a blizzard. Hope to be back next year!
